The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl
Full disclosure, I am fan of both Nirvana and Foo Fighters, I was already biased on expecting a great book, but it was nothing like I was expecting. I was hooked ten pages into the first chapter, as a father myself, knowing there isn’t anything we wouldn’t do for our daughters. This book was way more emotional than I was expecting, but it also connected me to Grohl, making me feel like we were just sharing stories. That said, there are some topics I wished he had spoke of, hopefully there is a sequel!
If you’ve ever air-drummed to Nirvana, belted out a Foo Fighters anthem, or just love a great rock ‘n’ roll story, The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl is a great add to your library. This memoir isn’t just a collection of behind-the-scenes anecdotes—it’s a heartfelt, humorous, and deeply personal journey through the life of one of rock’s most beloved musicians.
Grohl takes readers from his childhood in Virginia, where he first fell in love with music, to his early days drumming for Scream, and ultimately, to the whirlwind that was Nirvana. He shares intimate reflections on his time with Kurt Cobain, the heartbreak of losing him, and how he found a way forward by forming the Foo Fighters. Along the way, we get incredible stories—jamming with Iggy Pop, partying with Paul McCartney, and even playing drums for Tom Petty on Saturday Night Live.
What sets this book apart is Grohl’s genuine warmth and humor. His storytelling feels like sitting around a campfire with an old friend, filled with self-deprecating charm and infectious enthusiasm. Whether he’s talking about fatherhood, meeting his heroes, or nearly losing his voice from screaming too hard at a Joan Jett show, every chapter is bursting with passion.
For music lovers, rock history buffs, or anyone who enjoys a well-told life story, The Storyteller is a fun, inspiring, and emotional ride. Grohl proves that he’s not just a legendary musician—he’s also a damn good writer.

As someone who grew up in southeast Michigan with deep roots in the auto industry—nearly every member of my family worked in it—my path seemed pretty set. But I always felt the pull toward something more. I became the first in my family to earn a college degree, working my way through to a BA from Concordia University Ann Arbor, and later, a graduate diploma from the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto.
Now, forty years into a career as a Supply Chain professional, I find myself turning the page to the next chapter. Outside of work, I’m happiest with a book in hand, planning my next travel adventure, hitting the bike trails, or spending quality time with good friends. I’m also a proud dad to a special education teacher, and I still call Ann Arbor home, where I live with my partner, our two rescue dogs, and three very opinionated cats.
